What is Link Popularity?
Top Rankings In the Search Engines Depend on your Link Popularity
Good link popularity can drastically increase search engine traffic to your website. Well placed text links are often a very good source of targeted traffic that will have a direct impact on your link popularity and can even generate additional search engine traffic to your site.
All of the large search engines now recognize Link Popularity as being an important factor in their keyword relevancy algorithms. Therefore, increasing the amount of relevant sites that link to your site via your selected key terms can improve your rankings for those terms. Although there is no guarantee to getting good rankings, boosting your site's popularity can help you get an edge on your competitors.
Google uses three things to determine the ranking of your site:
- Presence of keywords in the content of your site.
- The number (and quality) of other websites that link to your site (called Link Popularity). This is the basis behind the PageRank algorithm used by Google.
- The text that these sites have used to link to you (called Link Text or Anchor Text).
You probably already know how to or have heard about putting keywords in the content of your site. This is considered on-site search engine optimization. In terms of the recipe for creating high search engine rankings, this is the the first part. The next part of the recipe for search engine success is to generate an off-site search engine optimization plan.
The biggest part of an off-site search engine optimization plan involves creating a strong link popularity for your site among your chosen keywords.
So, you have researched about optimizing your site for the search engines and have included the proper page titles and metatags and even the correct alt tags for your chosen keywords. Now you are wondering where your organic search engine traffic is. Even though you may have done everything correct within your site, unless you get other high-quality sites to link to you and unless you get them to link to you by using your keywords in the Link Text, there is absolutely no possibility of your being able to get top 10 rankings in Google and Yahoo for popular keywords.
So, how do you increase your link popularity?
You need high-quality websites to link to you, and based on the keywords you choose. Historically, the way this has been done is through reciprocal linking.
But, Increasing your Link Popularity through Reciprocal Linking is a BORING, TEDIOUS and TIME-CONSUMING Job.
While reciprocal linking is theoretically not that difficult to do, implementing it in practice takes a huge amount of time. Broadly, here are the steps that you need to take:
You need to use the search engines to find sites that are related to yours but are not direct competitors.
You also need to find sites that link to your competitors.
You need to visit these sites and see if they actually exchange links and whether they themselves have good link popularity (since if they don't have good link popularity themselves, exchanging links with them will not increase your link popularity).
If you decide that you want to exchange links with a particular site, you need to find out exactly how it wants you to link to it from your site.
You then need to manually add a link to this site in your site.
Then, you need to find out the email address of the owner of the website and send the owner a personalized email requesting that he/she adds a link to your site in return.
In many cases, you will not be able to locate the email address of the owner simply because the owner has not published any email address on the site. In that case, all the effort that you had put into evaluating whether or not the site is suitable for exchanging links will have been a waste of time.
If you do manage to locate the email address, you need to wait and see whether this site is willing to exchange links with you.
If the site is not willing to link to you, you need to remove the link to the site from your site. Once again, all the effort that you had put into evaluating the site, linking to it and sending an email to the owner will have been a waste of time.
You have to repeat the same process all over again for the next site that you want to exchange links with.
As you can see, doing all this manually would easily require you to put in a few hours of work every day for a few months at a stretch.
However, even after you have got a few good links pointing to your site, your work is far from over. Your competitors are doing exactly what you are doing as well!
So, in order to stay ahead of your competition, you need to constantly search for new sites with whom to exchange links.
As you have probably understood by now, reciprocal linking, if done manually, can quickly become a full-time job for you!
And worst of all, the job is downright tedious and boring!
Isn't your time better spent elsewhere?
But until now, there has been no easy way to automate the process of exchanging links. So, if you wanted to get top 10 rankings in Google and the search engines, you had only three choices:
- You could spend hours every day exchanging links with other sites and keeping yourself updated with the latest search engine positioning techniques.
- You could hire a professional search engine optimization consultant to do the work for you.
- You could advertise your site in a pay per click search engine like Overture or through Google Adwords.
NOW, there is a fourth choice. It does not involve reciprocal links. As a matter of fact, it involves only one-way linking where YOU CHOOSE THE TEXT TO LINK TO YOUR SITE.
